Workplace Violence and Harassment Prevention and Management: A Focus on the Health Care Service Sector in Canada

Rates of workplace violence and harassment in Canada’s health care sector are substantial and increasing, yet evidence about control measures and procedures and sector-specific research, standards, and guidelines are lacking. SRDC is conducting research on behalf of CSA Group to better understand the needs, gaps, and challenges surrounding workplace violence and harassment in the health care sector along with best practices and opportunities for developing standards-based solutions to address these issues, specifically as related to four health care service delivery settings: 1) home and community care, 2) long-term care homes, assisted living settings, and rehabilitation centres, 3) medical care settings, and 4) emergency/ambulatory/ paramedic services. Our methods include a national and international literature review and environmental scan along with key informant interviews and a national survey. Results will underpin development of a seed document(s), national standard(s), and/or support tools to support addressing the problem of workplace violence and harassment in the Canadian health care service sector.
